Restoring the Elf
February 1, 2017

Winter Luncheon Series: Feb. 1. Rick Carrion, Classic Yacht Restoration Guild president, will talk about his role in restoring the Elf. Built in 1888, the Elf is the oldest-known active small sailing yacht in America. Lunch features homemade soups, breads, dessert, and beverages. $20 per luncheon.  Reservations are required and can be made online or by calling  410-867-4486.  The luncheon series runs every Wednesday through February 22

Despite the inevitability of our death, and the complete uncertainty of its time,  few of us give it a moment’s thought until it is too late.  In this retreat we can learn how coming to terms with our mortality enriches our life and enables us  to meet our passing with dignity, confidence, and joy. We can be inspired to live a pure, liberating lifestyle in which every moment is meaningful.

Many layers of human emotions and experiences are portrayed in the classics presented bSDGUC;Pukotual “Wade in the Water” by Margaret Bonds. In addition, Dr. Grace Cho will present “Ballade No. 1” by Frederic Chopin - pure music in its finest form!

The new Laurel Library stands on land that has deep historic roots. The area has been home to a colored school during segregation, a dance hall, the Laurel Stars baseball team, and Emancipation Park. Join LHS Executive Director Lindsey Baker and historian Sandra Johnson for an evening of dipping into the history of the land on which our new library stands. 7 PM Thursday, February 9, 2017. “Black History in Laurel,” will be at the new Laurel Branch Library, 507 7th Street. CREDO Marriage Enrichment Retreat

The Chaplains Religious Enrichment Development Operation (CREDO) of Naval District Washington (which includes Quantico) is sponsoring and hosting many free events in January and February…

A Marriage Enrichment Retreat (MER) will be held Feb. 10-12 at the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Maryland. The MER will focus on deepening married couple’s commitment, self-understanding of each other while ensuring space for individual couple time. This retreat helps enrich marriages and is not a substitute for marital or individual counseling.

“Fighting For Your Marriage Workshop” will be held from 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 17 to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 at Bldg. 4, 220 Brookley Ave. on Joint Base Anacostia Bolling in Washington, D.C. This workshop if for couples preparing for marriage, newly married couples and couples who are looking to “tune-up” their relationship. This is a Prevention Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) workshop, and is one of the most well respected relationship-strengthening programs. PREP is solidly built on the most sophisticated research in the area of couple relationship, psychology, sociology and education. This workshop is open to active duty military, Reserves, retired military and DoD civilian employees.

Applied Suicided Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is held at Bldg. 4, 220 Brookley Ave. on Joint Base Anacostia Bolling in Washington, D.C. ASIST is a two-day program that provides participants with suicide intervention skills. Those who complete ASIST training will be ready, willing and able to provide “suicide first aide” and help a person at risk of suicide be safer from the immediate threat of death by suicide. Call for the dates of this workshop.

All CREDO retreats are absolutely free, including meals and lodging. They are open to active duty military, Reservists on active status and their immediate family members on a first-come, first-serve basis. Occasionally they are also open to retiree military members, when space is available.

Healthy Relationships and Dating Dangers

Join HopeWorks of Howard County and The Council of Elders community Academy for "Healthy Relationships and Dating Dangers," a Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month event.

This session is open to parents and students of all levels. Peer interactions and dating can impact students’ lives. Representatives from HopeWorks, a Howard County Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center, will share characteristics of healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships involving children.
Separate sessions for all student levels will be held. The session topics are:
“I Can/We Can” (elementary students) and “Is it Love”- focusing on healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships and dating dangers (middle and high school students).

The event will take place at Oakland Mills Middle School, 9540 Kilimanjaro Road, in Columbia, on Satuday, February 25th from 9am-11:15am.
