Friday May 19 & Sat, May 20, Ellicott City’s only public garden-park, run entirely by volunteers—the Whipps Garden Cemetery—will hold its annual fund-raiser Plant Sale at the First Lutheran Church at corner of Chatham and Frederick Road in Dunloggin.
The Whipps plant sale will feature many native perennial flowers, including many butterfly, rain garden, shade-loving, and deer-resistant plants. Many of the plants, including natives so favored in today’s landscape, are donated from the gardens of Master Gardeners. The sale is a favorite of Ellicott City gardeners because it features many unusual and hard-to-find varieties.
Special features: Master Gardener talks on ‘Building Rain Gardens’ by Caroline Feil, Bee Kind Butterfly Gardening’ by Betty Walke and ‘Using Herbs’ by Robert Glascock on Friday along with accompanying plants for each. Free compost bins will be available on Saturday morning.
The restoration of the 19th century cemetery into a garden park began in 1987. The park is today maintained by the Howard County’s Master Gardeners and is open to the public daily. It is owned by a non-profit organization, the Friends of the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Inc. Began as a family burial ground in 1855, Whipps is no longer an active cemetery; the last burial was in 1915.
All proceeds from the annual plant sale go for the up-keep of the one-acre Whipps garden-park, and fund such projects as keeping fresh wood chips on all of the pathways, signage for trees, shrubs, and selected perennials. Weeding, mulching, planting, and general nurturing of the garden is done by Master Gardeners and other community volunteers, including two garden clubs—Cross Country and Branch and Twig. Those who maintain the park welcome additional volunteers, including student groups and families, who would like to “adopt” a small area to care for. Volunteers work every Thursday from 9 until Noon, weather permitting, March through October.
The Master Gardener program is operated by the University of Maryland Extension Howard County Master Gardeners—over a hundred men and women—work as volunteer throughout the County on a number of horticultural and environmental projects. For more information about the Whipps Garden Cemetery, volunteer opportunities there, or the upcoming Plant Sale, call, email or text Aleta Gravelle at 410-274-7795, firstname.lastname@example.org
